{"id":936,"date":"2008-09-04T05:00:12","date_gmt":"2008-09-04T13:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/?p=936"},"modified":"2008-09-03T20:46:23","modified_gmt":"2008-09-04T04:46:23","slug":"palin-and-book-banning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/publishing\/books\/palin-and-book-banning\/","title":{"rendered":"Palin and book banning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a title=\"new york times on sarah palin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/03\/us\/politics\/03wasilla.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\">the NYT today<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shortly after becoming mayor, former city officials and Wasilla residents said, Ms. Palin approached the town librarian about the possibility of banning some books, though she never followed through and it was unclear which books or passages were in question.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting in Ms. Palin\u2019s first year in office, said Ms. Palin brought up the idea of banning some books at one meeting. \u201cThey were somehow morally or socially objectionable to her,\u201d Ms. Kilkenny said.<\/p>\n<p>The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, pledged to \u201cresist all efforts at censorship,\u201d Ms. Kilkenny recalled. Ms. Palin fired Ms. Emmons shortly after taking office but changed course after residents made a strong show of support.
