The books were taken by Chile from Peru during the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific. <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/books.guardian.co.uk\/news\/articles\/0,,2206568,00.html?gusrc=rss&amp;feed=10\" title=\"guardian article on books returned to chiles\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nivia Palma, national director of libraries, archives and museums in Chile, presented the books to Peruvian officials at a ceremony, calling the act a &#8220;concrete expression of our deep commitment to building a relationship of brotherhood and cooperation between our countries.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde thanked Chile for returning the books, and said the two neighbours must work to strengthen their friendship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Does this mean the two countries are putting their disputes about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friscovista.com\/news\/2006\/12\/10\/frisco-pisco\/\" title=\"the pisco wars between chile and peru\" target=\"_blank\">pisco<\/a> behind them?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And they were 126 years overdue.
