{"id":3902,"date":"2011-09-26T05:00:45","date_gmt":"2011-09-26T13:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/?p=3902"},"modified":"2011-09-25T18:03:30","modified_gmt":"2011-09-26T02:03:30","slug":"more-on-the-alt-tag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/webwork\/more-on-the-alt-tag\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the &#8220;alt&#8221; tag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"bibliodyssey home page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog-images-11\/bibliodyssey.jpg\" alt=\"bibliodyssey\" width=\"435\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I <a title=\"alt text not displayed on mouseover\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/webwork\/alt-text-not-displayed-on-mouseover\/\">recently lamented<\/a> my belated discovery that &#8220;alt&#8221; text was not being displayed on mouseover of my images.<\/p>\n<p>The estimable Peecay of <a title=\"bibliodyssey: great visually oriented books\" href=\"http:\/\/bibliodyssey.blogspot.com\/\">Bibliodyssey <\/a>has replied by e-mail with a description of his system:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I try to abide by the pure description (for a blind person, is how I understood it) to approximate an image with alt tag (eg. &#8220;woodcut of cat in colour from Japan, 16th cent.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>But then I try to put something specific to the book or author or illustrator in as the title tag.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always worked under the assumption that &#8211; when including captions as well, below the image &#8211; I was priming those images as best they could be to be open to image search engines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What I hear from the &#8220;SEO&#8221; types is that alt tags seem to help with search engines but title tags less so. That&#8217;s hearsay, really, and I haven&#8217;t tested it.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"search engine journal on alt and title tags\" href=\"http:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/image-alt-text-vs-image-title-whats-the-difference\/6930\/\">According to <em>SearchEngine Journal<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> it is indeed important to keep the various tags different. Ann Smarty, speaking of the alt and title tags, says, &#8220;include your main keywords in both of them but keep them different. Keyword stuffing in Alt text and Title is still keyword stuffing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wily Michael Gray has <a title=\"michael gray -- graywolf -- on image optimization\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wolf-howl.com\/featured\/how-to-optimize-images-search-engines\/\">a helpful guide to optimizing images for search engines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All good advice.
