{"id":100,"date":"2007-01-03T21:46:59","date_gmt":"2007-01-04T05:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/03\/night-canal-bruges-belgium-dec-20-2006\/"},"modified":"2007-01-03T21:47:37","modified_gmt":"2007-01-04T05:47:37","slug":"night-canal-bruges-belgium-dec-20-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightreading.com\/blog\/travel\/night-canal-bruges-belgium-dec-20-2006\/","title":{"rendered":"Night Canal, Bruges, Belgium, Dec. 20, 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"night canal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rightreading\/345024213\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"night canal\" title=\"night canal\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/162\/345024213_f33fa891e9_m.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this image from my <a title=\"bruges photoset\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rightreading\/sets\/72157594428093531\/\">Bruges in December 2006 photoset<\/a> (click image for larger view) I lightened and brought out detail in the dark areas using the following workflow:<\/p>\n<p>1. duplicate background layer<br \/>\n2. desaturate new layer<br \/>\n3. invert desaturated layer<br \/>\n4. gausian blur new layer (a lot)<br \/>\n5. change blend mode to soft light<br \/>\n6. adjust levels, curves, hue\/saturation<\/p>\n<p>This is a wonderful trick for bringing out detail in the shadow areas of underexposed photos. (BTW, I set my camera to underexpose slightly because information can be pulled out of dark areas but areas that are burnt away are just gone.)<\/p>\n<p>I also sharpened using my usual method:<\/p>\n<p>1. duplicate background layer<br \/>\n2. set blend mode to overlay<br \/>\n3. adjust transparency to about 55%<br \/>\n4. apply high pass filter<\/p>\n<p>This sharpens the image in a nondestructive way, and the image stays sharp when resized.<\/p>\n<p>No flash or tripod was used. The image was taken after dark (at 9:33) with an f-stop of 3.5 and an exposure of 1\/8.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, my flickr site is very lonely. No one is making any comments.
