homeward bound

The catalogue section of the book features 76 baskets by 76 different artists. The section was originally introduced with an opening spread. Because the introduction ran so long I had to save some pages, so this section now begins on the left with some text containing notes about the entries. The entries consist of photos of the baskets, sometimes together with details and sometimes just a single shot, as here, along with "tombstone" information (basic facts about the baskets and their artists). The tombstone information divided naturally into two groups of uneven length, so I set it as two off-center columns. I made the left column half the size of the basic text block and let the right column extend the rest of the "wide measure."

From narrowest to widest, the design has a basic text block (shown on the left in the first image below), a wider measure that includes the standard marginal space (shown on the right in the first image below), and an extra-wide measure that fills most of the page (shown in the third image below). Starting from these divisions, I made guides for the catalogue section that allowed dividing up the pages in a large variety of ways (depending mostly on the shapes of the baskets); I think this turned out pretty successful. Several examples follow.
