The Asian is home to what I believe is the only public mani wall in the U.S. The name comes from
the mantra "om mani padme hum" (usually translated as "the jewel is in the lotus," although that
translation is questionable). These collections of stone walls inlaid with prayer slates are found in
high mountain passes in the Himalayas. Always walk around a mani wall with your right side
facing the wall, so as to gain merit. On a nice day the area where the security
guard is standing is used for outdoor seating for Cafe Asia.
